Posting on Tintagel

of the record - solving the SnK puzzle

March 25, 2017 | 2 Minute Read

Certain reddit thread made me think about it. What kind of SNK fan are you? - a pretty good question.

  • the riddle

Shingeki no Kyojin is the first universe which I can identify with. I’m able to place myself there or create a new story situated somewhere in the SnK world.
The first universe which I felt familiar with (a log time ago) were the Arthurian Legends where Merlin, the legendary King Arthur’s wizard lived on Tintagel.

Opposing to cyberpunk, related to historical fiction and science fiction at the same time, best with a bit of fantasy or magic - SnK is still like this. The perfect anime marriage for me is FMA:Brotherhood.

Except that every relationship is blurred, faded and incomplete, every SnK character seems to be older than it’s necessary - young cadets are sorely tested by life, middle-aged soldiers (Military Police, Garrison) sharply realistic. Survey Corps veterans are shaped by their life experience and the need to survive.

My animal studies preferences are cognition, ethology and communication between species.
In Shingeki no Kyojin horse-human relations are the example of that kind of communication. The other, very special one, are Titans and their communication problem. Different perspective are human-titan relations based on typical prey-predator dependence and the fact that not human but a titan is apex predator in the context.

  • military plot-line

I’m finding interest in that type of genre. That aspect is underlined in Neon Genesis Evangelion or in the Dune novels (talking about my favorite books), expanded in Fullmetal Alchemist and exposed in Shingeki no Kyojin - it plots about war, politics, military, tactics, soldiers life and..

  • ..survival

My specialization is connected with ecology, and ecology is life in an ecosystem, more or less related to the survival theory, towards environmental protection.
Shingeki no Kyojin is post-apo, and post-apo means the art of survival.

  • Isayama’s drawing style

The harsh, raw, unperfect, above all recognizable. I like when manga does not pretend to be “charming”. I also love to see animals in there, especially their natural importance for the rest of existence.
SnK manga is full of horses, forests or wild empty spaces. Other time it’s cramped and full of interior details. The panels can suddenly become the frame for someone’s emotions or stay prepared to the expression of the battle dynamics.

  • at last the story-line

Foreshadows, flashbacks, Checov’s guns. All of them compose into a complex manga and appear to be planned, remembered by the author. Sometimes the panels are full of text. He has potential. I’m a bookworm. I would read his book.

So, what kind of fan am I? -> Demanding, but longstanding. Currently I’m Shingeki no Kyojin addict. I’m curious.
